Academic Teams
Whether you are in ninth grade or twelfth, you should all be in some stage of planning for college. ACHS guidance counselors emphasize the fact that colleges are looking for "well-rounded" students - not just those with excellent grades or athletic prowess. Participation in extra-curricular academic activities is crucial to ensure acceptance at the college of your choice.
The ACE (Academic Competition for Excellence), Forensics, and Debate teams are actively seeking members at this time. These teams are all sanctioned by the Virginia High School League, with District, Regional, and State championships in each event. Just like athletic teams, commitment and practice are required.
The ACE team participates in four district-wide meets during the fall. ACE involves general knowledge in the SOL subject areas, as well as other areas of knowledge. The team usually practices two afternoons a week. If you enjoy Jeopardy or Who Wants to be a Millionaire, this team needs you.
Our Forensics team has had outstanding seasons at both district and regional levels for the past few years, sending several students to the state competition yearly. Students compete in the following areas: Prose, Poetry, Original Oratory, Storytelling, Duo Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking (Foreign and Domestic, respectively), and Improvisation. As with Debate, Forensics requires dedication and individual preparation.

Most of you already have your credentials in good grades and athletics. Participation on one of our academic teams may be the very thing that rounds out your college application and gets you into the school of your choice. Additionally, excellence from these teams count for just as much as championships in sports when gaining recognition for ACHS. See Mr. Servis if you are interested in joining the ACE team and see Ms. Doherty if you are interested in joining Forensics.
