Guidance
Various guidance and counseling services are available from the School Counselor, Mrs. Kathryn Nash.
- Individual Counseling – one-on-one counseling for specific concerns, especially if the students education is being impacted.
- Small Group Counseling – 3-5 students who share a similar situation. Some topics that can be addressed are divorce, new baby in the family, blended families, death, incarcerated family member, alcoholism, and study skills.
- Classroom Guidance – Lessons for the entire class regarding identifying and managing feelings, social skills, decision-making skills, and anger management.
- Attendance – The school counselor is involved in assisting students in attending school regularly. This is done through phone calls, letters, and referrals to the school division's truancy officer. Also, various attendance programs are in place to encourage students to attend school regularly.
- Regular Attendance Program: The school counselor monitors the attendance habits of identified students and provides incentives for them to attend school.
- Outstanding Attendance Program: Students who have been present each day in the specified time period (usually the 9 weeks’ period) receive a goody bag of treats, and their names are entered into a drawing for a chance to win a free bike on the last day of school. A bike is given away to both a boy and girl.
- Perfect Attendance Program: Students who truly have “perfect” attendance – no absences, no tardies, and no early dismissals – receive a certificate, a ribbon, and are entered into a drawing to win $25.00. Three students will win – one from each grade level: Kindergarten, First and Second grades. This occurs each semester.
- Lunch Buddy Program – Designated students are matched up with a caring adult from the community to be a mentor. Students who could benefit from receiving a little extra attention and/or encouragement are referred to this program. The lunch buddies and students have lunch together at school during the students regular lunch time and then spend another 30 minutes reading together or participating in some other classroom activity.
Referrals can be made by parents, teachers, administrators, or the child.
